The food transition is one of the main factors in the fight against climate change, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research clearly states in its new study.

THE VOGLHAUS®CAFÉ

The daytime café with its main entrance in Wessenbergstrasse is lively and yet cozy thanks to its furnishings with lots of wood and natural materials and a wide variety of seating options, from steps to beanbags to a long communal table, where conversations always arise with people you didn’t know before.

It is a modern self-service concept offering the finest coffee and tea specialties, delicious homemade cakes and tarts, breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the day, all of course in the highest plant-based fair trade and organic quality .

For the past 20 years, the hospitality, quality of the offer and ambience have always achieved top marks in social media and the company has received numerous awards for innovation, social commitment and its pioneering role in sustainable, tasty and healthy food.

It was recently described in the press as a “blueprint for the gastronomy of the future”.

We bear responsibility

The German Basic Law – and also the constitutions of other European countries – states: “Property is an obligation. Its use shall at the same time serve the common good”.
The Bavarian constitution is even clearer: “All economic activity serves the common good”.
According to the intention of our laws, the purpose of all economic activity should therefore not be exclusively to increase the capital of a company, but to increase the welfare of all: To ensure a sufficient income and equal starting opportunities for all, to appropriately reward performance and diligence instead of ownership and the resulting power, to promote sustainable services and products that can remain in a cycle, to preserve our earth for all inhabitants* and descendants, including animals and plants.

Our food supply causes 1/3 of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
No progress in transportation and no energy revolution has such potential to stop climate change as intelligent food choices.
This can be implemented by all of us starting today.
At VOGLHAUS, it has been a successful reality for many years.

We have been working with Eaternity for a long time, which calculates the carbon footprint of all our homemade dishes and cakes for us (and also for the vegan Berlin supermarket chain VEGANZ and the Black Forest TRESS BRÜDER, among others), but also takes into account water consumption, rainforest relevance, animal welfare and health aspects.
We are very proud of the fact that for years we have always achieved “excellent” values of around 70% savings compared to conventional restaurants and cafés.

At the heart of Eaternity’s work is the development of the world’s largest environmental database for food, which, among other things, helps to calculate the carbon impact of individual foods and entire dishes, thereby raising awareness of smart and modern nutritional choices in society.
The calculations for more than 550 ingredients include all processes of the entire production chain.
Eaternity’s life cycle estimates are created in close collaboration with scientists recognized in the field.
The Eaternity database is maintained by scientists from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), the University of Zurich (UZH), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich), the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Quantis and other institutions.

Since DAS VOGLHAUS KAUFHAUS opened its doors almost 25 years ago, it has been writing a success story that was continued four years later with the addition of DAS VOGLHAUS CAFÉ.

Right from the start, it was difficult to get a seat here or there. We have already received a number of awards and are treated as something very special in many travel guides and magazines. Our guests praise us for our hospitality, the quality of our offer and the beautiful atmosphere created by our timeless furnishings and motivated staff. We are proud of this and it is also what drives us to keep improving and developing. Thanks to our loyal customers, who have always encouraged us on this path.

Purchasing criteria

After working intensively on the quality and sustainability of our gastronomic offering in recent years, we have been focusing more intensively on our merchandise since the start of 2024. We have developed a catalog of 9 purchasing criteria that are closely based on the criteria of the Ethical Style trade fair in Frankfurt and that support the UN’s “Sustainable Development Goals” (The Global Goals).

We only purchase merchandise from companies that clearly and credibly meet criteria from our list of requirements. As a rule, these are companies that we have been working with for many years.
